Green Mobility Meets Award-Winning Technology

Dahon’s New Urban Folding Bike and Folding Bicycle Helmet Win Eurobike iF Awards
September, 2009

DUARTE, CaliforniaSeptember 11, 2009 — This year’s Eurobike iF Award Jury selected 77 prize winners from amongst more than 400 entries. From these 77 prize winners, the eight best products were singled out for GOLD Awards. One of them was Dahon’s brand- new urban folding bike, the Ios XL. The jury described the Ios as a “perfect example of a stylish, functionally designed folding bike that meets the demands of urban mobility and flexibility.”

Ios XL

The Ios XL, is the flagship bike of a series of full-size folding bicycles by the US-based, global folding bike market leader, Dahon. It’s designed to meet the specific needs of urban commuters, folds down within seconds, but rides like a full-size bicycle. The range incorporates a wide array of Dahon’s latest patented technologies, including integrated lighting, bike pump, and a revolutionary dynamo-driven Phone/GPS/device charger.

“The Ios is a complete rethink about the needs of urban cyclists,” states Joakim Uimonen, Dahon Product Design Manager. “We threw out the constraints of standard bicycle frames and components, completely re-designing them where necessary. We came up with some radically new innovations that we feel are very important for the urban bike category.”

Ultra Compact Fold

Ios bicycles have the geometry, riding position, and handling characteristics of a full-size bicycle. But the patented folding technology Dahon is known for allows the 24” wheeled bike to be folded in seconds to a size only slightly larger than the most compact 20” wheel folding bicycles. Urban riders who want a full-size bike but also need the convenience of a compact fold now have the best of both worlds with the Ios.

Integrated Phone/GPS Device Charger

Designed into the Ios XL is the newly developed BioLogic* ReeCharge, a device that will charge iPhones, iPods, GPS units, or just about any small electronic device, through a USB port. The ReeCharge incorporates a 1600mAh lithium polymer battery that stores
excess power generated by a dynamo hub when the bike is ridden. Proprietary circuitry converts and regulates the intermittent power generated by the dynamo. The battery
then outputs a stable current to safely charge electronic devices. With the ReeCharge, any cyclist with a dynamo hub in their bike always has green power to go.

The Perfect Fit

Since Dahon developed the original “Hon Folder” 25 years ago folding bicycles have allowed users single-axis adjustment of the handlebars: up and down. With the new, patented Andros* stem, riders have an additional dimension of adjustment – forwards and backwards. With both height and reach adjustment, riders can find their optimal riding position on the bike – whatever position that may be. They can choose an upright position for more comfort or better visibility when riding in traffic, or a forward leaning position for a sportier, faster ride. A single quick release adjusts both stem and handlebar position.

Integrated Lighting

Most bicycles feature bolt on lights that look more like an afterthought than a central and important feature of the bicycle. Ios bicycles feature the Valo* light that is integrated into the design of the bicycle. The position of the Valo light is similar to the front light of a scooter or motorcycle; it is located centrally, in the middle of the handlebars, and high up for the best visibility. The Valo features a HiLux LED bulb and is powered by the bike’s dynamo hub.

Integrated Pump

The award-winning BioLogic™ PostPump is an ingenious combination of a seat post and powerful floor pump. The pump mechanism is hidden inside the seat post so the pump is always at hand, hidden from the elements and thieves. The high capacity BioLogic™ pump can inflate a tire in as few as a dozen strokes and can easily reach 110 psi. Ergonomically, the PostPump is just like a floor pump: you stand while you pump and use the saddle as the handle. So say good-bye to frustrating mini-pumps, kneeling in the dirt, and arm cramps.

The second of Dahon’s Eurobike award-winning products is the new Dahon Pango folding helmet which makes use of patented Pulsium technology.

Dahon Pango Folding Helmet

Designed specifically for urban cyclists the Pango folds in seconds to half the volume of a standard helmet and features replaceable panels to optimize it for use in rain or cold conditions.

“Most cycling helmets used by urban riders are either based on performance racing helmets or skating helmets,” stated Joshua Hon, Dahon vice president. “We saw the need for a cycling helmet that addressed the specific needs of the urban cyclist. Urban cyclists are often on and off their bikes – getting coffee, stopping to chat with friends, or popping into a store for an errand – but what do they do with their helmets? They can either hang the helmet off their handlebars where it’s vulnerable to theft, clip the helmet to the outside of their bag where it dangles and catches on things, or simply walk around holding a sweaty helmet. But the Pango folds small enough to fit into just about any bag.”

The folding helmet also features replaceable panels on the top and rear that allow tuning for function or fashion. Riders heading out into the rain need only replace the perforated grid panel with the solid rain panel to help keep their heads dry. Multiple color options will be available.

The name Pango is derived from “pangolin,” an animal found in the jungles of Malaysia that has hard plates covering its back. When threatened, it rolls into a ball for protection.

The Pango helmet adjusts for head sizes between 55-61 cm and meets EN and CPSC safety requirements.

  • Dahon offers two IOS models, the XL at €1499 and the P7 at €999 and both will be available worldwide from Spring 2010.
  • The BioLogic ReeCharge System will be available from March 2010 at €79 and is already included with the IOS XL.
  • The Dahon Pango folding helmet will be available from March 2010 at €99 or US$129.
