Our Interview with Quinton Pullinger

In this issue of the Dahon Dispatch we talk to Quinton Pullinger, Dahon Product Manager for the all new Dahon Glide.

Q: Thanks for your time Quinton, tell us a little about the new 2007 Dahon Glide.

QP: The Dahon Glide was designed around the principal of a full sized bike that folds to roughly the same size as our 20” models. With the great success of the Ciao winning Dutch Bike of the Year in 2006 we were inspired to expand the range. The low step through frame design and cool lines of the Glide make it appealing to a very wide demographic.

Q: Why a 24" folder?

QP: Some people may think 20” folders are a little odd and too quirky for them. But with 24” wheels and by using clever Dahon technology we could still keep the fold relatively small but also keep the appeal to those looking for full sized looks but with the added convenience of a folder.

Q: The Glide was exhibited at trade shows in Europe and the US. These markets are quite different in terms of taste, what has been the reaction?

QP: The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and it looks like we are going to have a very successful launch of this model. As mentioned above, the target markets for the Glide are quite wide ranging from urban commuters through to the café set. Dealers and distributors throughout the world are as excited about this product as we are.

Q: The Glide won a Silver IF Design Award at Eurobike 2006. What do you think made it stand out against it’s competitors.

QP: The Glide has an elegant look with smooth flowing lines so from a design standpoint it is a beautiful bike if I do say so myself. It stood out against competitors because of it’s appeal to everyone - young and old, hip urban commuters and those who just enjoy the freedom a folding bike gives you. It’s the ultimate ‘one size fits all’ bike. It comes fully equipped with lighting, racks and fenders and obviously the best feature - it folds!

Q: Finally, what was your inspiration when looking at frame design and component selection?

QP: Inspiration came from Europe, Holland mostly. Amsterdam is full of bikes with low step through frames but what stood out was the fact that both young and old, male and female rode the same bike, mostly to and from work or to buy some groceries or veggies form the local market. I then decided to focus on that style, with some modern touches and what we got was a great award and a great regular bike, which just happens to fold as well.
