Gudday

I am looking for a bike cover for my Bike Friday New World Tourist which is fitted with split drop bars.
I have been using somewhat thick pipe insulation for protecting the frame of my Dahon Flo when in transit. The thickness of the pipe insulation however causes some difficulties in closing the transport case. Sands Machine advertises a thinner, though somewhat costly, alternative (http://www.sandsmachine.com/ac_cover.htm). Might their be some cheaper alternatives being used amongst our group?
Using A Trailer

Just wanted to offer an alternative to the old chestnut of loading up a folding bike for touring. Being new to 'the fold', I decided to use a Carry Freedom City trailer to haul my camping gear around with my Vitesse P18. I have had many tours on conventional bikes with panniers but was drawn to the trailer because it folds flat, puts less stress on the bike and is much easier at train stations than removed panniers tents etc.

The trailer is so easy to unfold and fold and hitching can be done single handedly. it comes with a courier type bag that can be unclipped and thrown over the shoulder, leaving the other free to carry the bike. Folded flat the frame will fit between the seats on a train, magic, and I reckon would fit in El Boso with the bike with care.

In terms of towing I find that the trailer is slightly easier than weighty panniers and the bike feels the same as normal making honking easy and the ride a pleasure.yes it is limited to types of travel. Two wheels and single track dont go together (time for single wheel version if your that way inclined) Steps are not a problem as you unhitch and use the trailer like a pull along suit case. Narrow doors etc are easilly conquered due to 2 castor wheels allowing sideways wheeling.

In all I'm very impressed so far with its usefulness and now I wonder how I managed without it. Take a look at carryfreedom.com. I will update this as I do more in the months to come.

Cheers

Graeme

Graeme

While visiting my small town LBS for something else, I only half seriously asked if they had a rear rack for my new Speed P8. I'm sure they had not seen a folding bike until I showed up with an Mu P8 a couple months ago; but I could always count on them for parts and accessories.

The mechanic showed me an aluminum Bontrager Back Rack 1 and assured me it would fit. Not only was it easy to install; but my large 2,350 cubic inch paniers fit with none of the dreaded heel strike. The rack is rated for 50 lbs; but I suspect using the largest of 4 supplied rails reduces that somewhat.

The only problem now will be deciding whether my wife or I get the Back Rack 1; and who gets the arclite /diaper bag combo.

We are in the process of fitting 2 Curve D3s into Samsonite Aeroline Spinners - 29" x 20" x 13". So far, so good, tho fenders and rear rack must come off and apart, as well as wheels and pedals. The suitcase is legal for size-based regulations--in our case flying from Boston to Vienna. Flying internally in Europe has a total weight limit now, which is 20 kg (44 lbs) in economy class, so all checked bags together must be under this weight. There may be an extra 5 kg allowance for sports equipment. To check a "bicycle," Lufthansa would charge $200 each way. One ski bag can go for no charge.

Question: Are people deflating tires to make more space, or because of low pressure in baggage hold?

Definitely not heaps of space, but I'm thinking maybe a helmet can be wriggled in some where.

Thanks, Judy

Flying With A Bike In Australia

Hi all

I'm about to fly domestically in Australia and also to Japan with my Uno and have discovered surprisingly good policies. All the major Airlines (Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar) seem to look favourably on flying with bikes. Virgin even gives an extra 5k of luggage for free:
______
Guidelines for Guests who purchase their fare on or after 18 August 2008, for travel on or after 1 September 2008
If you are travelling with Sports Equipment, you will be eligible to check-in an extra 5kg of baggage allowance free of charge. Excess baggage charges will apply once the full allowance, including the additional 5kg allowance, has been exceeded. For example, if you have purchased a baggage allowance of 23kg, and are travelling with a bike, you will be eligible for a total checked baggage allowance of 28kg. If your bike weighs 10kg, you will be able to take additional checked baggage (such as a suitcase) weighing up to 18kg.
Sporting Equipment includes but is not restricted to:
Bikes
Golf clubs
Snow skis
Surfboards
Cricket/tennis bags
_______

Jestar allows customers to check in luggage with a Linear measurement of 1.91 or 2.77m - depending on the plane (both domestically and internationally). Qantas also have allowances for bikes, however their info is harder to find and they state that the bike should be in a bike box.

Hope it helps

gav:)

Bike Bag For Commutes - What To Use For A 20" That's Easy And

Hi there,

I have the Mu P18 and will need to put my bike into a bag every day when I go to work so that I can check it at our coat and bag check at work. I also plan on using the metro sometimes and taking my bike on there in a bag/cover so as to be a little less conspicuous and to not dirty any other commuters with my bike.

So, here is what I'd like to find in a bike bag:

1) and the most important feature: my 20" should easily fit in there without me having to struggle to close the bag.
2) I would like it to be as little bulky as possible. this is not for flying, i just needs something clean and simple (that won't easily tear, of course) to hide away my bike while at work and on trains.
3) Ideally I will easily fold it up when not in use and throw it into my backpack while I ride.
4) it not be an EL Bolso

I see bags on ebay and have no idea what to expect, and am not all that sure that my bike would fit nicely in any of them.

Here are some examples of what I see online:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dahon-Folding-Bike-Car...p3286.m63.l1177

http://cgi.ebay.com/Waterproof-Carrier-Bag...id=p3286.c0.m14

http://www.radel-max.de/Folding-bike-acces...-0-0-00-7.html#

http://www.discountbicycles.co.uk/biz/prod...olding_bike_bag

Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions would be really helpful.
Carrying An Airporter On A Curve

I had some success carrying my Airport on a Mariner 20 last year and with some refinements in attachments found it worked better on the Curve. The key I found was to use two short blue web bungees from Wal-Mart around the seat post with both hooks fastened to an Airporter strap. These stabilized the bag enough for short smooth rides or rolling around a railway station. For serious riding I added two orange ratchet straps fixed to the handle and over the side to the bottom bar of the luggage rack. The side view picture shows using only the blue bungees right under the seat. The rear view shows the orange ratchet straps. I rode 204 km in a day without having much problem with the Airporter.

Flying With A Curve D3 And A Regular Suitcase

Less than a week ago I had my first flying-with-a-bike experience. I bought my Curve D3 in London, and picked up a regular suitcase (I think it's 26") to fly with it to Montréal. Here's a photo:

I had to remove the wheels and the rear fender, but other than that it fit perfectly. I even managed to fit a helmet, a lock and some winter clothes I had with me. Even though it came up to 24kgs, the lovely lady at the British Airways counter didn't charge me (she did mark it as heavy though), and I never got asked about the contents of a suitcase. Did I mention that I love British Airways?

I have now packed it again, after some lovely riding here in Montréal, and will be taking a train to Toronto tomorrow. And a week after that I'm headed back home in Argentina. I'll update this thread after each trip.

(by the way, if anyone is going to Critical Mass in TO this friday, look for a red Curve D3 and say hi!)

Touring Rack For Curve D3? Well Just Maybe.....

If you've got shoes larger than size 9 and use a rack pack (trunk) or El Bolso on your Curve rack, you've probably been fighting with heelstrike issues and tweaking the bag placement. Also looking for the narrowest rack packs you can find

Looking at the rack, you can see it is tilted forward and that if it somehow could be tilted back it still wouldn't increase the fold size.

Last month my Dahon dealer mistakenly sold me a 20" arclite rack to fit on y 26" Cadenza upper rack mounts. Wrong rack, no wheel clearance, you need the touring rack.

BUT,

Instead of returning the rack I tried it out on the Curve. Just a tiny bit of bending on the solid aluminum seatstay mounts and it fits fine. The horizontal fold is unaffected as it is still within the wheel circumference. The vertical fold is only slightly affected (2 inches at most) and in my case not at all as I have a suspension seatpost.

No heelstrike issues anymore. Rack trunks and ElBolso fit fine. Wide rack trunks fit fine. Rack trunks with fold down panniers work fine. Small panniers work fine.

And here's the best bit.

I could not believe how HEAVY that 16" Arc rack was. I thought it was an ArcLight, but it is a steel Arc rack and one of the heaviest boat anchors I've ever seen. The 20" Arclight is about 1/8 of the weight. So my bike is much lighter now too.

I think Dahon should give some thought to upgrading the 16" rack line in future to increase heel clearance and reduce weight. There's a lot of room to tweak without increasing fold size at all. That fancy curvy design looks nice, but I suspect could be replaced by something a bit lighter and more functional.

Has anyone used an "airline legal sized" suitcase to fit a full size dahon in (again, it is the dahon espresso, with 26" tires)? How did it work out? Any assistance would be great. I want to consider other options, especially reading about some of the issues with the airporter travel case. I'm looking forward to hearing from you all. Tailwinds and smiles,
CAT
(btw, it is AWESOME to commute with in L.A. with the metro/bus system)!

I've just started biking, but, I was wondering the Bungee cord can be used for? I can't seem to wrap it around anything save for the steel/aluminum rack itself. Is it to attach something like a milk crate? I'm looking to attach something like a backpack, but I am afraid of snapping the bungee cord.

Recent Airporter/airporter Ii Experiences?

how often do you get charged for an oversized luggage? I see some threads about this but they are a few years old, just wondering about more recent experiences, esp since most airlines raised the fees to $150-$200 now, are they more strict ?

Bike Friday Travel Bag For Dahon?

I'm looking for a soft bag for my Speed TR, and since I've heard some disappointment with El Bolso, I've been looking for other options. I ran across the BF Travel Bag (Bike Friday Accessory Store). It looks about right, and isn't too expensive. Has anyone tried this? What do you think?
